At the beginning of 2010 I set a goal for myself to paint portraits from life that focus on brushwork and observing color. Eventually I intend to exhibit them in a huge quilt like mosaic. In July I embarked on this project and to date I have completed over 50 FACEs. In September 2010 my newsletter featured the first in this series that showed my husband and a friend holding their portraits in front of their faces outside a RV. We sarcastically dubbed it “White Trash American Gothic” and this serendipitous photo launched a second aspect of this project which I post regularly on Facebook.
My intent is not for these to be finished portraits in the style I typically do commissioned work. I want them whimsical, fresh and vibrant! This is essentially an exercise that has taken on a life of its own and become a rare opportunity to share what I do in a unique way. It is typically a two part process where the subject sits for a couple of hours for the painting and later we get together to stage the photo op. The photo aspect came about as a happy accident and since then I am working to make them even more interesting and inventive. Remember the carnival version of putting your head through a hole for a crazy photo op? Well this is pretty much the reverse of that! The amusing part is that you don’t even need to be the person in the portrait to be holding it in front of your face for a photo.
For me there are so many things to love about this project! Normally an artist paints alone and as a “people person” I now have contact with the human race! Also I have been able to get caught up with old friends and meet new ones. Many of my models tell me how much they have enjoyed it... I suppose you can say I am bringing a previously exclusive experience of portrait painting to the masses!
The month of February 2011 saw my first ever public
exhibition of this project at Gallery by the Bay in Stanwood Washington!
I am having the time of my life painting these FACEs and I am
entertaining the idea of taking it on the road and painting FACEs along the
way. What fun it would be to travel and meet common folk around the country!
I have big plans for this adventure in paint and will keep you posted as
they develop from the "percolating" stage into reality.
